Few white Bordeaux resonate in quite the same fashion as Chateau Margaux’s celebrated Pavillon Blanc. Created way back in 1920, it continues to be a glorious anomaly in this famous left bank commune a century later.

This stunningly rich 100% Sauvignon Blanc is drinking fabulously well at present, yet it has the potential to evolve for 15-20 more years. Waxy lemon oil, honeysuckle, nectarine, and subtle new oak characteristics are all present in this light gold-colored, long wine.

Intense citrus and tropical fruit aromas of warm grapefruit, lemon curd, pineapple and a fair amount of cedar. The rich, full bodied palate provides refreshing medium to high acidity balancing the concentrated toasted almond and lemon pie flavours. Long finish with a pleasant touch phenolic grip from the new oak. Just starting to be approachable. Drink now to 2020+. Tasted February 2009.

Pale lemon hue. A lot of new oak on the nose, reminds me of a Coche-Dury in some ways. Apple, vanilla pod. Very well balanced, lots of creamy oak but very minerally at the same time. Just lacking a little nervosity for me, a little edginess that would make it even more alluring. Citrus finish. Very fine. Tasted April 2006.

Dense and powerful. Very tight, with aromas of flint, apples and citrus fruit that follow through to a full body, with honey and vanilla character. Needs time. Like a premier cru white Burgundy. Best after 2010. — JS

With a nose of fresh squeezed citrus, honeysuckle, vanilla and grapefruit in the nose, the wine is fresh, lively and packed with sweet lemons that offer bracing acidity with sweetness. June 2015

Very green fruits rather than creamy/oaky side of Pavillon. Weight is more obvious on the palate. Not especially concentrated. Quite fresh – not as zippy and exciting as 2004 (though the alcohol and acidity are pretty much the same). A bit astringent on the finish. (JR)
