Chateau Rauzan-Segla 2eme Cru Classe, Margaux

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2014
Region: Bordeaux, Margaux

The superb Margaux estate Rauzan Segla has been soaring in quality over the past few years since the Wertheimer brothers of Chanel fame took charge and replaced the much-loved John Kolasa, who had undoubtedly brought this 2eme Cru Classé chateau back to its rightful place in the Médoc’s rankings, with the dynamic Nicolas Audebert. AT the time of the 1855 classification it was considered one of the very best 2nd Growths and only in the past decade since 2010 has it really come back to its true potential.

Tasting Notes and Scores

95 JS

Fantastic aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants and strawberries follow through to a full body, super-integrated tannins and an extremely long finish. The bright acidity gives the wine a linear edge that focuses in all the fruit. Minerally. Drink in 2021.

James Suckling

The 2014 Rauzan-Ségla is just as impeccable from bottle as it was from barrel. Silky, perfumed and nuanced in the glass, the wine exudes finesse. Expressive floral notes, spice and succulent red/purplish stone fruits are all beautifully delineated. In 2014, Rauzan-Ségla is a wine of understated class with the potential to improve for several decades. Tasted two times.

The deep garnet colored 2014 Rauzan-Ségla reveals an open-knit, expressive nose of potpourri, unsmoked cigars, spice box and red loam with a core of plum preserves, blackcurrant jelly and bay leaves plus a touch of garrigue. Medium to full-bodied with compelling earthy layers and a real savoriness in the mouth, it has firm, chunky tannins and bold freshness, finishing on a lingering mineral note.

The blend this year is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, harvested between September 22nd and October 16th, at an average yield of 37 hectoliters per hectare. It was aged for 18 months in French oak, 60% new. The alcohol is 13.5%, and the pH is 3.59. LPB

The 2014 Rauzan-Ségla has quite a lush, precocious bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, hints of juniper berry and brown spices, gaining intensity with continued aeration in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, crisp and focused, precise with a detailed, mineral-driven finish that is a real treat. This is a fine Rauzan-Ségla even if it might ultimately end up as a footnote to the exemplary 2015 and 2016. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Vinous

This has a lightly firm singed alder frame, which works well with the core of dark currant and plum fruit, melding easily with a velvety back end that lets alluring black tea and anise notes emerge steadily. A bit flashy in style, but will certainly have fans. JM
