(from purchased wine) Palish red color. Rather indistinct, light aromas. Fruity and spicy, showing more oak than fruit or soil tones. Can't match the Gevrey premier crus for stuffing or lift, or the Lardiere vinification for precision.

Gevrey Chambertin is the northernmost of the great communes of the Côte de Nuits. There are 26 Premier Cru and 8 Grand Cru. Half of these Premier Crus surround the Grand Crus near Morey, the other half are situated close to La Combe de Lavaux. The soil composition is made of both chalk and clay. The vineyard of Griotte is located opposite Chambertin Clos de Bèze and next to Chapelle Chambertin in the southern part of the village, near Morey Saint Denis. The wine is fermented in vats for 3-4 weeks and aged for 18-20 months in oak barrels. Griotte Chambertin is elegant, very aromatic wine with slight aromas of liquorice and red cherries. Nose a little cheesy rather than fresh. Lacks the precision of the Clos St-Denis. A bit heavy and chewy today. Solid but not ethereal, Overpriced? (JR)
