Tasting Notes and Scores
Discreet aromas of minerals and menthol, with a suggestion of toast. Much less sweet and full in the mouth than the Batard; in fact, this youthfully closed wine shows a considerably cooler aspect and is characterized by citrus and rocky flavors. In the context of this cellar-or most others in '06 for that matter-this is like tasting a wine from another vintage.

This is actually somewhat similar to the nose of the Folatières in the sense of having that mineral reduction character so often found in Chablis but as one would expect, the aromas are notably more elegant, refined and complex while being followed by textured, pure, detailed and delineated flavors that are quite reserved and cool at present while culminating in a focused, crystalline and driving finish. This does a slow build from the mid-palate before exploding onto the knockout finish. A Zen wine.

After my review of a reconditioned bottle last year, this encounter with Domaine Leflaive's 2006 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru was a salutary reminder of the reality consumers experience with this estate's wines in the late 2000s and early 2010s—and above all in the 2006 vintage. Entirely oxidized, the wine was undrinkable.

Oak still in evidence. Manages to be both dry and rich. Dense. Lively. Reverberant. (JR)
