Tasting Notes and Scores

97 BI

The 2004 Brut Rosé is a wine of amazing elegance and finesse. It boast a very intense and round fruity character. The Pinot Noir gives beautiful mature tannins that are already very well integrated at this early stage. They provide the perfect balance to the fresh, lively acidity. The finish shows wonderful floral and mineral notes that achieve to give a refreshing and very forward character to the wine. It is very classical in style and already hugely appealing.

The 2004 DP Rosé is just as charming as one would have expected. The elegance and vivacity of the vintage take a leading role sublimely complemented by exuberantly toasty, smoky notes. Lovely pinot depth, spicy and vanilla-laden. Tight and linear, tense palate with satiny texture and refined, extensive length. A super elegant Dom Pérignon Rosé, in a classic cool style.

97 points – Essi Avellan MW

This must be the most unusual Dom Perignon Rose ever made. Not only does its warm and inviting, bronze hued, salmon color appear to be surprisingly light, given that this has the highest proportion of red wine ever used to color any DPR (because the skins this vintage were so pale), but the amount of red wine added increase the Pinot Noir content to an unprecedented 66%, and you have to go back to the mesmerizing 1993 to find another DPR that comes close (64%). Geoffroy talked about pushing the Pinot Noir as far as he could without breaking the tension between it and the Chardonnay, but for me its red-fruit aromas on both the nose and palate are full-throttle Pinot Noir, and that is both its mark of difference and its mark of greatness. The spicy, vanilla-laden fruit is mind-blowing and simply begs for the P2 treatment.

Everything is here already. Great flower and fruit. Obvious hints of milk chocolate, nougat, purple roses, raspberry, orange and Granny Smith apples. A tight and classic contexture. Unfortunately, far too many bottles of this adorable beautiful wine will be drunk far too early by night crowds worldwide.

The 2004 Dom Pérignon Rosé has put on remarkable weight over the last year or so. A rich, voluptuous wine, the 2004 Rosé hits the palate with stunning depth and resonance. The flavors are bold, rich and beautifully resonant from start to finish. Raspberry, cranberry, smoke, spice and crushed rocks build to the stunning, powerful finish. Vinous and ample, the 2004 Rosé will drink well for decades. The 2004 just keeps getting better with time in bottle.

The fascinatingly copper-colored 2004 Dom Pérignon Rosé has a beautifully delicate bouquet of red fruits, and indicates a great purity and freshness. Kept on the lees for at least nine years to smooth the tannins the 2004 reveals a weightless power on the palate. It has a deep and concentrated, highly elegant Pinot character (though Chardonnay and Pinot are more or less 50/50), and is full of finesse and freshness. The 2004 is intense and vinous, yet pure, precise and extremely fine. Adorable.

Next to the explosive 2006 and steely 2008, 2004 is a quieter vintage for Dom Pérignon rosé (despite the formidable 28% red wine addition), although the house style is very much at play with an almost tobacco-like smoky tilt to the notes of roasted pear, caramelised grapefruit and white pepper. It’s bold and fulsome at first with its Pinot Noir richness, yet finishes more relaxed and citric, flowing and silky-smooth. It might not be the most dramatic vintage, but it is beautifully pitched for current drinking in 75cl.

They wonder whether they included too much Pinot in this wine. Cheesy nose, much more obvious acidity than the 2005 with a strong rose-petal aroma. Tight and tense. Very focused. Much more youthful than the 2005. (JR)
