An intense golden-yellow color dresses the Pol Roger prestige 2004 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill, which opens with a clear, deep, dense, ripe, fresh, pure and elegant bouquet of matured apples, apricots and lemon flavors along with exciting spicy flavors. Although this Brut is already more than 11 years old, it is dew-fresh and still developing—slowly. This Champagne is highly complex and well structured on the palate, with grapefruit flavors; it is a full-bodied and intense, yet very firm, persistent, fresh and very elegant assemblage of unnamed Grand Cru Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. It reveals a very long and complex, powerful but stimulating finish and, obviously, eternal youth. The finish is powerful and stringent, and reveals great aging potential. The wine is somewhat restrained and too compact at the moment, though, and should benefit from a longer bottle aging.

At 20 years of age this vintage of Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill has settled into a comfortable sense of ease and mature charm, propped up by an injection of youthful energy in magnum. It’s a cushioned, soft-focus wine of delicious pear tart, pecan, yellow plum and orange citrus flavour, fulsome with a measured Pinot Noir weight yet showing the accessible, open-knit side of the year’s structure. In magnum this has further to go, not yet showing as much savour or tertiary character as in bottle.

This has trademark richness, power and complexity with a layer of spiced grilled hazelnuts and brown-mushroom aromas set across lemon, grapefruit and dried-red fruits. The palate has a full, pastry-like texture showing bold flavors and an assertively fleshy cherry and peach core. The tannins are smooth and ripe, carrying the finish long. This is framed up for further enrichment. Plenty to offer now but best from 2020 and a decade after that still.

The 2004 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is a charming, beautifully balanced wine in its prime today. Offering up aromas of golden orchard fruit, honeycomb, freshly baked bread, iodine, spices and candied peel, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and charming, with a pillowy mousse, lively acids and a long, saline, delicately caramel-inflected finish. While this vintage has long lived in the shadow of 2002, this is an excellent Churchill in its own right.

Disgorged in 2014. Dosage 9 g/l. Tasted blind. Very deep orangey straw. Lots of tension and autolysis on the nose and then it’s so introvert that it almost disappears on the palate. But there is so much that’s exclusive to champagne to enjoy here. Tingling! Slightly bitter. Interesting bitter-orange notes. Quite distinctive. (JR)

Magnum. From Pol Roger UK. Tasted blind. Quite spicy on the nose and just a little bready. Quite a bit of grip on the palate, firm, almost chewy but rounded with creamy texture. Crisp acidity and fabulous intensity. Powerful and more red fruited than the previous wine (which turned out to be the 1999 from bottle). My guess: 1999 bottle. (JH)

Magnum. Tighter and crisper than the 2006 with remarkable youthfulness and poise. The complexity waits until the end, suddenly flourishing with long, extravagant dried-flower and salted-sourdough aromas. Even though the structure is tense, I don't think this has the fruit power to sustain very long ageing, so I would drink this relatively soon. (RH)
