Tasting Notes and Scores

95 AG

The 2013 Lodovico seems to point towards a different style than that which Lodovico Antinori first favored at Tenuta di Biserno. The wine's translucent color, lifted aromatics and mid-weight structure are a significant departure from the past. Wonderfully lifted, fragrant and expressive, the 2013 has so much to offer. Blood orange, mint, sweet spice and raspberry jam lead into the silky, mid-weight finish in this supremely elegant wine.

There is pretty currant, berry and chocolate character to this rich and fruity red. Full and velvety.

Conditions were ideal in 2013 - the summer was not too hot, and August brought some welcome rain while September was fine. This has a youthful colour and a nose that is a little closed, showing aromas of crushed blackcurrant, blackberry and black raspberry alongside delicate cream and spice. It's super-bright and appealing in the mouth, with dark chocolate and liquorice flavours accompanied by a lush richness which is contained by firm tannins. Concentrated but very fine, it still feels very young but is already impressively opulent.

Superripe, plush and complex, this nevertheless focuses on black currant, blackberry, Tuscan scrub, iron, tobacco and spice aromas and flavors. The tannins are muscular but not overbearing, yet the vibrant acidity provides energy and focus. Terrific length. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2022 through 2035. BS

The 2013 Lodovico performs differently than you might expect, especially considering the knock-out performance of its cousin, Biserno from the same vintage. There was some discussion among my tasting group, which included Lodovico Antinori (directly at the estate), about the integrity of our samples, but it was not followed through with conviction. We concluded that the wine was simply in a closed phase when tasted. Indeed, this vintage offers a distinctive note of crushed granite and pencil shaving that you do not get in the others. This edition is almost salty in flavor compared to those. All said and done, I believe the 2013 vintage is enjoying a slower development, and we simply need to give it time. The tannins are dry but serve as ample glue to piece together the wine's many moving parts. It needs time to settle and flesh out. ML
