The 2013 Guidalberto offers lovely depth, juiciness and plumpness. This is a decidedly exuberant, racy Guidalberto. Open-knit and delicious, with striking aromatics, the 2013 is expressive today and should continue to drink well for the next 7-10 years, give or take. Sweet red cherry, plum, cinnamon and new leather meld into the supple finish.

Extremely attractive aromas of plums, light berries, and milk chocolate with just a hint of earthy spice. Currants too. Full body, soft integrated tannins and a smooth textured finish. Delicious to drink now or hold. Consistently outstanding quality.

In general, 2013 is considered a very good vintage. There was plenty of rainfall at the start of the year, so there was no vine stress, and conditions in August and September were generally outstanding. The colour is still very deep: a dark ruby with a little garnet tone just developing at the rim. This 2013 proved to be a favourite with many of the tasters, but there was some bottle variation; the nose of my sample showed some evolution with notes of Bloody Mary, spicy tomato, rare meat and iron, but after almost two hours some fragrance and floral aromas resurfaced. On the palate the tannins were a little more gravel-like and a bit more muscular in style, but these were encased in a wonderful, super-silky texture with flickers of smoke and toast. Beautiful and bold, the 2013 Guidalberto is one of the best editions of this wine ever made. It shows great energy and momentum with dark fruit, spice, tobacco and black truffle that come together with impeccable unity. I love the heft and power that supports this wine at the back. Its tannic structure is firm but velvety and will continue to soften as the wine evolves over the next few years. I would suggest holding onto this bottle for three to four more years before popping the cork. ML
