Dark ruby. Very intense licorice, red cherry, blueberry and balsamic oils on the nose and palate. Clean and fresh but also much rounder and sweeter than the other Brunellos I tasted from La Magia this year, this finishes long and smooth with enticing vanilla and cherry nuances. Easy-to-drink, luscious Brunello that is irresistible.

The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is weighed down by that exuberant fruit ripeness that is so characteristic of this vintage that saw hot, dry winds throughout much of the summer. Cherry or blackberry confit is followed by dark spice, tobacco and grilled herb. The tannins show a point of astringency that may, or may not, relax with more bottle aging. Only 5,000 bottles were made.

Youthful deep ruby. Closed with a touch of Moroccan leather and oak. Concentrated marasca cherry fruit of great depth. Wonderful coating tannins, purity, length and power. (WS)
