1978 Cossart Gordon, Bual Madeira

Vintage: 1978
Region: Madeira
% Alcohol: 20.00

The 1978 Bual, with Five stars out of Five from Richard Mayson, comes from grapes hand harvested 47 years ago from the warmest and sunniest location on the Island, Calheta. It’s trodden in traditional wooden lagares and then aged for more than 40 years in old casks in Funchal and later Canical. This is Bual at its finest and one you will want to secure in the cellar as very little will be in circulation. What else is significant here is that it is bottled under the Cossart label, always noted for its more elegant and finessed house style. With almost tropical notes on the nose, this is exotic, super complex and you’d be forgiven for thinking this is older than it is judging by its complexity. Rich, super fresh and a bone dry finish. A must have!

Tasting Notes and Scores

19.5 BI

Made from grapes grown in Calheta on the south side of the island, trodden in a traditional wooden lagar, now only seen in museums. Very deep mahogany colour with a glint of olive green; very concentrated and quite high toned on the nose (1.1g/l VA), aromatic and complex with traces of cedar and tobacco box; gloriously rich and focused on the palate (105 g/l residual sugar), Elvas plums retaining greengage freshness and acidity which stops the wine from cloying, spicy too, long and beautifully poised with a mouth-watering finish. 1294 bottles in total.
