2015 Haut Bailly

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2015
Appellation: Pessac Leognan
97+ (WA)
An estate that is at once both truly historic and very forward-thinking, under the ownership of the American Wilmers family and stewardship of Veronique Sanders, Haut Bailly has been producing wines of incredible quality for the past 10-15 years – although of course their history goes back way, way further than this. In fact the estate has some of the oldest vines, and one of the largest proportions of old vines, of any estate in the region. These old vines are all-important as the deep, complex root structures allows the vines to search out the rainwater left deep in the soils by winter and Spring rains, keeping the vines hydrated and fully operational even during hot dry summers.

Tasting Notes and Scores

93-95+

Bordeaux Index

One of the finest estates in the southern Pessac region, Haut-Bailly gets better every year. Tight but giving up some ripe red and black fruit and spice characters. Engaging and vibrant. The palate is packed with dense, sweet, fine tannins and has a spine of acidity which keeps the ripe, rich fruit on the energetic side. Layered and juicy. Very good. (60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot.)

Wine Advocate

Composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Haut-Bailly offers up a tantalizingly savory nose of smoked meats, chargrill, tapenade, unsmoked cigars and black truffles with a core of black currants, black cherries and wild blueberries plus wafts of iron ore and bouquet garni. Medium to full-bodied, very firm and yet wonderfully plush with a powerful core of fruit—this vintage is truly an iron fist in a velvet glove. The finish goes on and on with persistent earthy/minerally notes and savory/sweet fruit. Although it is tempting and indeed delicious right now, the wine still possesses many restrained layers and should handsomely reward the patient. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Interim Issue Mid-February 2018, The Wine Advocate

The 2015 Haut-Bailly is simply "singing" on the nose with irresistible, quite opulent red berry fruit. Wild strawberry, raspberry and cranberry are laced with iris petal and potpourri. Exquisite. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, melted red berry fruit mixed with cracked black pepper, sage and tobacco. This is very cohesive and complex on the finish, perhaps the most sophisticated Haut-Bailly up until this point. Tasted at the Haut-Bailly vertical at the château.

This is an incredible young red with precision and focus that is second to almost none. Full body with a ultra-fine tannin drive that is seamless as it is endless. It ends with such power. Try in 2024 but already impressive to taste.

Very dark, luscious colour - one of the most distinctive colours of all! Savoury and not forced but awfully attractive. Round and fresh. Very nicely assembled. Definitely Graves. Long and very 'cashmere'! Real lift yet intensely ripe fruit too. Very neat! 13.6%

Once again, I am absolutely stunned by how vivid the 2015 Haut-Bailly is. Bright, red-toned fruit and floral overtones convey freshness. Deep and unctuous in the glass, with tremendous concentration, the 2015 has more than enough clout to age well for several decades. It will need at least a few years in bottle to be truly enjoyable. vinous.com, February 2018
