1999 Vega Sicilia, Unico, Ribera del Duero

Colour: Red
Vintage: 1999
Region: Castilla y Leon, Ribera del Duero
% Alcohol: 14.00

The wines of Tempos Vega Sicilia are recognised for their other-wordly quality and character. They produce several wines, including the great value Pintia from their Toro estate and Macan from their Rioja vineyards, but the focus is on Ribera del Duero and the Tinto Fino grape - the Ribera iteration of Tempranillo. Here they produce their entry-level Alion, a hugely popular wine made for earlier drinking, Valbuena, a high class red aged for 5 years in barrel and bottle before release, and two wines under the Vega Sicilia label: Unico, produced from a single vintage and aged up to 10 years before release, and Unico Reserva Especial, made from a blend of three Unico vintages and released once a year. Characteristically Vega is quite different to anything else. It is defined neither by length nor breadth; nor by fruit, nor structure, by power or by freshness. Somehow it manages to combine all these in a way that is reminiscent of great Bordeaux but with a unique and effortless sense of untapped energy rumbling underneath. The very fact that it ages so magnificently, and yet can be approached at almost any time during its life, is testament to its balance. Under winemaker Gonzalo Iturriaga de Juan, Vega has arguably never been better and he brings to bear his extraordinary ability to ‘tame’ the wild nature of Ribera de Duero with incredible skill and precision. His tannin management is among the very best anywhere in the world creating a sense of structure and power and yet always allowing the fruit and freshness to take centre stage.

Tasting Notes and Scores

96 DWWA

Powerful aromatics, with an interplay of tobacco, dark fruit and menthol. The palate is complex, ripe and savoury, without being blown. I appreciate the wine more than I did in 2016, when I gave it 95. Cold spring with April frost and a hot summer, with harvest beginning 11 October, stopped by intense rain before restarting 1 November and finishing with the Cabernet Sauvignon on 16 November. Aged 21 months in large-capacity wooden vats, 20 months in new casks, then 17 months in semi-new casks, finishing with 24 months in large-capacity wooden vats. Aged in bottle until release in 2009. 96,159 bottles, 2,596 magnums and 157 double magnums. Tasted from magnum.

Ruby-red. Shockingly deep in color for a ten-year-old wine. Explosive aromas of cherry compote, black raspberry, blood orange, Asian spices and smoky minerals. Pure, vibrant and sweet, offering intense cherry and red berry flavors, with tangy mineral spine and an exotic smokiness. Extremely deep but energetic, with a powerful echo of minerals and singed orange on the endless finish. This is remarkably youthful but highly alluring already.

The 1999 Único was produced with 90% Tinto Fino and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon with 14% alcohol. The grapes were picked from the 11th of October, the same as yesteryear, and finished the 16th of November with the Cabernet Sauvignon. The magnum shows quite well; it has depth and concentration and is lively and balanced, with a certain elegance. 2,595 magnums produced. Artwork by Eduardo Arroyo.

The 1999 Unico is a blend of 90% Tinto Fino and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 21-months in large wooden vats, twenty months in new barrel, seventeen months in semi-new barrels and then 24 months in large wooden casks. The harvest was interrupted by downpours and did not finish until November 16. It has a very intense, austere bouquet with blackberry, cedar, granite and a touch of dried orange peel. It is tightly coiled but unfurls beautifully in the glass, though it retains its rather aloof personality. The palate is medium-bodied with a rounded mulberry and raspberry leaf-infused entry, with bay leaf and graphite underneath. It is linear, focused and precise. It is very harmonious, almost Claret like with great length on the finish that offers a sorbet-like freshness. 96,159 bottles produced. Drink 2016-2030+.

90% Tinto Fino, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. They started to pick on 11 October but had to stop until 1 November because of heavy rain. The last Cabernet grapes were picked on 16 November. The wine remained in large-capacity wooden vats for 21 months before being transferred to new casks where it was aged for 20 months, followed by 17 months in second-use casks and 24 months in large-capacity wooden vats. Released in 2009. 96,159 bottles, 2,596 magnums and 157 double magnums. From magnum. Sweet, very evolved – slightly too-ripe impression on the nose. And then on the palate acidity dominates to a slightly uncomfortable extent. Just a little too tart for comfort. The palate impression is jagged rather than smooth. (JR)
