Único is Spain’s undisputed equivalent to a First Growth’s Grand Vin. The vineyard is planted at an elevation of 700 to 900m and a vine density of 2,222 vines/ha, with the 40 best hectares selected for the production of Único. While Tinto Fino is always the largest component in the blend, Bordeaux varieties play an important supporting role in this incredible, age-worthy wine – the 2014 comprising 94% Tinto Fino and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon – not only one of the longest-lived wines of Spain, but of the world. While there is no consensus on what the first bottled vintage of Vega Sicilia was (Tim Atkin writes, “Some say that it was 1915, or 1912, but owner Pablo Álvarez says he once drank an 1898”), there is consensus on the fact that Único is a reference point for Spanish fine wine.
