2012 Ridge, Monte Bello, Santa Cruz Mountains

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2012
Region: California
% Alcohol: 13.50

Not only are the wines of Ridge long-standing favourites of those who have been ‘in-the-know’ in terms of California wines, they are much-loved by the wine trade, and BI is no exception. They are quite simply incredible value, true wines of origin. However given their relatively small production and far-and-wide distribution they aren’t the easiest wines to get hold of – so wherever you can it is worth buying on release. Wines have been made from vineyards now worked by Ridge since the 1880s, but the vineyards fell into disrepair during Prohibition. They were resurrected and replanted in the 1940s before the modern story of Ridge began in 1959, when a group of Stanford Research Institute scientists decided to take over the Monte Bello vineyards as a hobby, with incredible results from ‘hands-off’ winemaking showing exactly how good the terroir here was. As dedicated champions of local, old-vine varietals, the Zinfandel-based wines of Geyserville and Lytton Springs followed in 1966 and 1972; in between which the founders hired the future winemaking legend, Paul Draper, in 1969. Over the next five decades he helped Ridge become recognised as one of the greatest wines in America, and truly deserving of the “Californian 1st Growth” tag.

The 2012 Monte Bello is a beauty, wafting from the glass with complex aromas of plums, blackberries, bitter chocolate, black truffles, cigar tobacco and hints of crème de cassis. Its new oak is already well integrated. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, richly tannic and very deep, with a layered, concentrated core of fruit framed by chalky, fine-grained tannins. The 2012 is still quite youthfully chewy at this early stage, but there's a certain lavishness to its ripe blackberry fruit that suggests this will be a dramatic, even decadent Monte Bello in the style of the 2002 when it reaches maturity. Late September heat made for a record-setting harvest in only 16 days. The 2012 is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, and it saw a small water addition to finish at 13.8% alcohol. (William Kelley)

Ridge's 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate may very well be the single finest value in California Cabernet Sauvignon in its price range. Rich and explosive, with plenty of vintage 2012 exuberance, the Estate Cabernet hits the palate with masses of dark, concentrated fruit that nearly buries the mountain tannins. There is plenty of tension, beneath although 2012 remains radiant and incredibly appealing today. Shades of tar, graphite and smoke add darkness on the finish. The 2012 could use a few years in bottle to shed some of its baby fat, but it is remarkable by any measure. I don't think there is a finer California Cabernet Sauvignon today at this price, but if there is, I would like to taste it!

Very deep purple. Burly and briary with great savour and beautifully managed tannins. Clearly very ripe fruit but great freshness. They say this has more tannin than first growths. Already a pleasure! Must be made with extraordinary skill. Heady, balsam notes. Really sophisticated with no sweetness nor alcohol. Great cleanliness on the end. (JR)
