Day 3 and 4 took us across the Gironde to explore the Right Bank, showing a different side to the 2024 vintage.

In Pomerol, Assistant winemaker at Lafleur Ralitsa told us “there was no such thing as luck in 2024, only hard work”. That hard work has paid off with a number of producers on the Right Bank who have made aromatic, mineral wines- particularly those with limestone bedrock on the plateau of St Emilion. Overall, there’s more consistent mid-palate weight and depth on this side of the Gironde, with several top estates vying for mantle of the vintage’s best wine.

Pessac-Léognan saw similar challenges to the rest of the Left Bank, but the higher levels of Merlot here added some flesh to the area’s signature gravelly tannins. Haut Brion was classically muscular, and Carmes Haut Brion captured the vintage’s floral aromatics well, both were standouts.
