Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2009 Beausejour Duffau Lagarosse is a blend of 75% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is very tight on the nose compared to the others – lifted briary and wild hedgerow notes, hints of dried violet and strawberry preserve. The palate is medium-bodied with chunky ripe tannins. It feels succulent towards the finish, fanning out nicely with blackberry, boysenberry and cedar. Very focused, judicious extraction here with a great life ahead. Tasted December 2012.

Good deep red-ruby. High-pitched perfume of strawberry and allspice. Elegant and on the lean side but with good density and energy to its tangy red fruit and floral flavors. Very ripe but a bit youthfully medicinal, in a more traditional style. Finishes firm and focused, with classic dryness. Plenty of richness lurking, but this will need a decade in the cellar.

Inky pur ple. Very ripe, aromatic nose offers bl ackcurrant, black pepper, bay leaf and sage. Then fresher and lighter on the palate than the nose suggests but a bit disjointed today, with tart acidity framing moderately intense red and black fruit flavors. The finish features a pretty note of spicy plum but could use more nuance and length.

This big wine (nearly 15% natural alcohol) is a blend of 77% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. It boasts an opaque blue/purple color along with a gorgeous bouquet of charcoal, incense, truffles, blackberry jam, black currants, raspberries and flowers. While enormous in the mouth, the limestone soils in which the grapes are grown give the wine good freshness as well as laser-like clarity and precision. Amazing to taste, this massive, super-concentrated powerhouse comes across as ethereal and almost feminine despite its extravagant fruit, density and richness. It is a modern day legend for sure! Anticipated maturity: 2025-2050+

The intensity on the nose is instantly noticeable. The strong aromas of juicy plums, crushed stone, flowers, oceanic nuances and herbs pop right in front of you. The fireworks however is on the palate. The wine is incredibly concentrated, full-bodied, rich, flamboyant and sexy. The fruit is energetic, pure, velvety, long and intense. The wine fills your palate with sweet fruits and doesn't want to leave, which is a good thing as you don't want it to stop! 2009 marks the initial vintage for the team of Nicolas Thienpont, where they were in charge of everything from start to finish. A blend of 77% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2009 Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is utter perfection, and man, what a wine. Deep, inky, incredibly concentrated, yet also silky and weightless, it delivers that rare mix of intensity and weightlessness on the palate. Offering layers of blackcurrants, crushed flowers, lead pencil, incense and loads of spice-box, it shows the intensity and rich of the 2009 vintage yet is perfectly balanced, has building tannins, and a huge finish. It’s as good as it gets. Give bottles another 4-5 years and enjoy over the following 2-3 decades.
