2006 Chateau Beychevelle 4eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2006
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Julien
% Alcohol: 13.00

A wine which has come so far since 2000, Beychevelle was always blessed with propitious terroir but had performed somewhat below par for this benevolent appellation. Undoubtedly benefiting from the combination of the expertise of GM Philippe Blanc and the investment in a stunning new winery, Beychevelle has progressed from a St Julien ‘also-ran’ into one of the leading wines of the appellation.

Tasting Notes and Scores

92 DWWA

The classic blackcurrant aromas of the 2006 Beychevelle are trimmed with notes of eucalyptus, smoke, and earth. The fruit continues on the palate with an agreeable sweetness, balanced by firm tannins and moderate extract leading into a lingering finish. This wine is approachable now, but will certainly age for another 20 years. The harvest began at Beychevelle on 20 September and continued into October; the final blend is 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.

Firm ruby red in colour, tannins that are softening up but remain a little foursquare, a serious Beychevelle with layers of cassis and blackberry fruit, along with smoked earth, soy and tobacco. Getting ready to drink, the structure should elongate further over the next decade. Harvest September 20 to October 5, 60% new oak.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Beychevelle has a more open and more complex bouquet compared to the 2006 Talbot. I appreciate the clarity and detail here with briary, cedar and touches of forest floor, suggesting that it has both feet planted on its drinking plateau. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm grip in the mouth. This is clean and fresh with a fine line of acidity: brambly red fruit, white pepper, cloves and a touch of fennel on the finish. This surpasses previous bottles that I have tasted. Tasted January 2016. Drink 2016-2030.

A property that seems to be awakening, this St.-Julien leans toward more of a Margaux style. The attractive earthy, floral, red currant, and raspberry notes are impressively intense and complex in the aromatics. This dark ruby/purple-tinged wine displays elegance, finesse, and a beautiful mouthfeel in a restrained, moderately intense, but still classic style with sweet tannins. Tobacco, cedar, earth, and red and black fruits are prominent in both the aromas and the flavors. This wine can be drunk now or cellared for 15-20 years.

Bright, deep red. Musky currant, licorice, tobacco, cedar and herbs on the nose and palate. Juicy and on the lean side but with very good focus and cut to its flavors. Characterized more by its vinosity and elegance than by body or power. The moderately long finish features firm tannins that avoid coming off as hard.

There's lots of smoky oak and roasted coffee on the nose, with red fruits. Medium-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and chewy tannins and a medium finish. Well-crafted. Best after 2012.
