Tasting Notes and Scores
Another excellent Calon. Plenty of delicious, crunchy fruit here - like biting into a great ripe apple - strong, solid structure and good layers of mineral character. Good focus here too: this is a wine that we really enjoyed, judging by the nodding heads and impressed faces. I don’t mean to patronise when I say ‘fun’; I mean it in the best sense, that it’s a wine you’d really enjoy drinking. Not enormous in structure but natural, flowing, juicy and fresh.

A red with wonderful aromas of blackberries, spices and plums that follow through to a full body, with lovely integrated tannins and a polished, fine finish. Better in 2017. – jamessuckling.com, Feb 2014

Rather lush, with fig, boysenberry and black currant pâte de fruit notes at the fore, backed by singed spice, apple wood and charcoal details that lend balance. More flattering than austere in terms of style, with the fruit lingering in the end. Much more fresh and pure than the slightly funky and disappointing '10. Best from 2015 through 2024. 8,330 cases made.

[78CS/20M/2PV] A ‘cool’ character to the nose, classic Médoc! Very nicely balanced, fresh, elegant, firmly tannic but fine textured wine, moderately concentrated, freshly ripe, long and even, slender without being lean; transparent, mineral infused and with excellent length. Purist’s claret in the best sense; very nice indeed. 2022-32+ [M.Schuster, Bordeaux Mar/Apr 2012]

A blend 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot and this includes the vin de presse. It has a refined bouquet of dark berries, wild hedgerow and a touch of rose petals, and seems lighter than the 2009 or 2010, although it displays fine delineation and sense of femininity. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasing, rounded entry where the Merlot neatly fleshes out the Cabernet. It is not a complex Calon Segur, neither does it possess the spine-tingling backbone and tension of the 2010. But is has a satisfying purity and a lovely smooth, silky texture towards the finish and a minerally aftertaste that lingers longer than I expected. This may merit a higher score after bottling. Tasted April 2012.

Its bigger sister, the well-made 2011 Calon Segur boasts a dense ruby/purple color, sweet cassis and black cherry fruit intermixed with hints of earth, oak and spice, medium body, moderate tannin, a pure mouthfeel and a long finish. Give it 3-4 years of bottle age and enjoy it over the next 10-15 years.

Tasted blind. Very dark crimson. Sweet biscuits on the nose. A little lacking in stuffing but a reasonable balance. Drink: 2021-2032 – jancisrobinson.com, Nov 2015
