Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2004 Cos d'Estournel is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet in color with a touch of brick, the nose is still very youthful, sporting notions of plum preserves, blackcurrant cordial and Black Forest cake with hints of garrigue, wild sage, charcuterie, black olives and unsmoked cigars. The medium to full-bodied palate is generously fruited with bags of earthy and black fruit preserves layers, framed by chewy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long.

This Cos d’Estournel has great potential. The nose has certainly closed down since I last tasted it at en primeur, less floral and more tertiary with a surly broody quality. Cedar and a hint of dark chocolate coming through with aeration, roasted herbs. Very well defined. The full-bodied palate is very tannic structure with a solidity that suggests extended cellaring is mandatory. This Cos d’Estournel is powerful and masculine, yet with wonderful freshness and vitality and a slight savoury tang evolving with further aeration on the persistent finish. Dark, youthful red; sweetly ripe, gently oaky, seductive early bouquet; a rich, fresh, beautifully balanced, complete middleweight Cos, with a very fine tannin; ripe and savoury to taste, an almost juicily ripe core, long and complex in flavour, sweet, succulent, complete and very long to finish. A particularly fine Cos, showing beautifully today, delicious already, but no hurry! Now – 2030+ [M Schuster March 2014]
