Tasting Notes and Scores

95 DR

Rich, dark and spicy in its aromatics and its fruit - really get that feel of a red wine steeped in aromatic herbs and spices. Less evident austerity than the Montrose although that is not to say that this is a generous vintage at Cos, more that it benefits from a sense of powerful exoticism. The hail meant picking the Cabernet a little earlier than they might have wanted (harvest was September 5th to 16th), but they have handled it well, and this still has plenty to give with a little more ageing in bottle. 80% new oak. Composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2011 Cos d'Estournel gives up compelling notes of roasted nuts, black cherry compote, blueberry pie and red and black currants with touches of yeast extract and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied, very firm, grainy textured and with a great core of youthful black fruits, the palate reveals loads of savory layers on the very long finish. This is very youthful and slowly maturing—a very impressive showing for this vintage!

A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc cropped at 36hl/ha, the 2011 has a pleasant, sedate bouquet that is well defined, perhaps missing a little tension and animation, but replete with succulent blackberry, cassis and violets aromas that render it light and feminine. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy, slightly furry tannins on the entry. The acidity it keen and citric, lending this more vigour than Montrose, whilst the finish has fine precision and length. Jean-Guillaume has fashioned a very fine Saint Estèphe for the vintage. Tasted April 2012.

[65CS/30M/5CF] Dense, cedary, slightly toasty oak marked nose; a rich middleweight, fresh to firm in acidity, firmly tannic, fine in its slightly austere proportions; long and firm in the mouth, very Cabernet Sauvignon in flavour, complex, aromatic, mineral, a long, fine, classic claret in a firmer style; will be severe early on, and probably need 15 years before broaching; not the fat, ripeness class, scope and projection of 2010, a more muscular version of 2008 perhaps? That said this is very good. 2024-35+ [M.Schuster, Bordeaux Mar/Apr 2012]

Michael Schuster

92-94 BI

Cos are clearly focused on creating dramatic, show-stopping wines - and they clearly believe the vintage can cope with this demand. In the event the wine shows immensely pure and powerful cabernet fruit, powerful structure and no little gloss and excitement. A wine to sit up and take notice of.

Bordeaux Index

92-93 JS

Very dense and structured with spices, currants and berries and an underlying spiciness. Full body, with chewy tannins and a fresh finish. Structured. Firm. Slightly hollow center palate. Excellent considering the difficulty St. Estephe had with hail and early harvesting.

James Suckling

90-93 WS

Lilac and violet aromas quickly give way to dark toasted spice and black tea notes, followed by remarkably creamy-textured cassis and plum compote flavors, all offset beautifully by a hint of bitter cherry and tamarind on the finish. There's a saturated feel that shows no hard edges. A touch languid rather than driven, but this wine tends to put on weight and gain greater focus as it ages. Tasted non-blind.-J.M.

Drink 2022-2035 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc. Just 30% of the crop went into the grand vin. Inky with black core and bright dark purple rim. Stunning colour. A touch of raisiny fruit. Dry, powdery tannins but quite dense and very firm. Powerful but cool. Long the length is more structure than flavour or aroma. Needs to take on flesh. A bit hard on the finish. (JH) 13.5%
