Tasting Notes and Scores

92 DR

An estate that has eyes on it right now as it changes hands from the Albada to the Helfrich family. At this point winemaker Frederic Ardouin had been there for three years, and has made a wine with a supple quality to the tannins, and plenty of juice running through it. Very much ready to enjoy and will give a ton of pleasure. Easy to recommend. 10% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 30% new oak. Drinking Window 2021 - 2036
Blind tasted by Jane Anson (at Bordeaux, 19 Feb 2021)

This is really well done with soft tannins and berry, cherry and chocolate character. Full body, with round tannins. This year has more Cabernet Franc with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot.

The du Tertre is a blend of 10% Merlot, 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 20% Cabernet Franc (a high percentage) picked from 8th to 27th September. I actually left my sample glass to unwind over 10 minutes at it made a huge difference. The nose offers ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit, well integrated oak and some lovely orange blossom aromas with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a plush, rounded entry. It has slightly lower acidity than its peers but is very sensual with supple fresh strawberry and raspberry towards the finish. Very fine. Tasted April 2012.

Modern style, with bolder plum, cassis and raspberry fruit flavors laced with roasted balsam wood and black tea. Nicely polished on the finish.-J.M.

A seductive 2011, Du Tertre exhibits a dense purple color along with an attractive, fragrant, flowery nose of red and black fruits, licorice and a touch of earth. With good texture, medium body, an excellent finish, and no hard edges, it can be enjoyed over the next 10-15 years.

[60CS/20CF/10M10PV] Ripe, plummy fruit nose; fresh, and relatively supple in the vintage, with a light dry tannin; bright red fruit flavour, with no excess acidity and nice light length; attractive and not in any way hard work. Very pleasant. 2018-25 [M.Schuster, Bordeaux Mar/Apr 2012]

This blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot is somewhat closed, with high acidity and noticeable austerity. The color is a healthy dark ruby/purple and the wine exhibits notes of damp earth, tobacco leaf, sweet and sour cherries and loamy soil undertones. Drink it over the next decade.

Very smoky and toasted. There is no Margaux perfume here – instead the oak steals the limelight. The quality of that flavour is such that I find it very charming, if not 100% traditional. (RH)

Drink 2017-2027 Very dark, black core. Fresh, lightly cedary red fruit. Verging towards capsicum on the palate but not too green. Slim, fresh, lightly structured. A light touch overall and tannins well managed. (JH)
