2005 Chateau Haut-Bailly Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2005
Region: Bordeaux, Pessac-Leognan
% Alcohol: 13.00

An estate that is at once both truly historic and very forward-thinking, under the ownership of the American Wilmers family and stewardship of Veronique Sanders, Haut Bailly has been producing wines of incredible quality for the past 10-15 years – although of course their history goes back way, way further than this. In fact the estate has some of the oldest vines, and one of the largest proportions of old vines, of any estate in the region. These old vines are all-important as the deep, complex root structures allows the vines to search out the rainwater left deep in the soils by winter and Spring rains, keeping the vines hydrated and fully operational even during hot dry summers.

Tasting Notes and Scores

98+ JD

One of the top vintages of Haut-Bailly out there, the 2005 is a quintessential example of this terroir, showing incredible finesse and elegance paired with ample concentration and depth of fruit. Complex notes of black cherries, darker currants, gravelly earth, graphite, smoke tobacco, and cedar notes all emerge from the glass, and it’s full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, and pure class on the palate. I’ve always thought the 2009 was the greatest vintage from this estate that I’ve tasted, yet this is certainly knocking on the doorstep, although in a more classic, structured style. I find this insanely good today, but it’s still youthful and is set for another 30+ years of truly spectacular drinking! Hats off to Veronique Sanders and the team at Haut-Bailly for another magical wine. Drink 2020 - 2050. Tasted Feb 2020

One of the highest blends of the two Cabernets in the vertical and this majors on violet flowers and savoury blue and black fruits, lilting aromatics that are drawn up and out of the glass, so precise, careful progression through the palate, with slate tannins and a touch of cola on the finish. Just a totally delicious wine that demonstrates the subtlety of Haut-Bailly, and more generally how you don't need to hit people over the head with power to get exceptional quality out of a glass of wine. Harvest September 14 through to October 11. 41hl/h yield. Denis Dubourdieu consultant. 50% new oak.

The 2005 Haut-Bailly, is dense purple with loads of graphite, earth, spice, blackberry and blueberry fruit, beautiful balance, medium to full body, and stunning purity, texture and length. Still incredibly young at age 10, this wine is set for 30 or more years of longevity. This is a great, great Haut-Bailly that will one day probably rival 2009 and 2010.

The 2005 Château Haut-Bailly is going to a be an awesome wine. Note the future tense. Deep in color, the nose is tightly coiled with blackberry, cedar and graphite aromas, not unlike a Pauillac in style. There is wonderful definition here, real intensity and drive. The palate is structured and perhaps less opulent than other recent vintages of Haut-Bailly, though it still articulates its origins—that Pessac-Léognan gravelly tincture coming through, especially with aeration. There is density here, authority even, but the fireworks are set to ignite in 5-7 years' time. I cannot wait to watch the pyrotechnics. Tasted December 2015.

This shows a great purity of fruit; firm and direct notes of raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries that open to intense notes of fresh flowers. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins. This wine is tight and long -- you know this is good immediately. Pull the cork after 2016.

Smoke, campfire embers, menthol, espresso, 5 spice and dark red fruit aromas hit it, just right. On the palate, the wine is soft, mineral-driven, tannic, fresh and with dusty tannins to offsetting the ripe dark red berries. Still youthful and perhaps a bit tight, give it another 4-5 years in the cellar to allow for further softening and additional nuances to shine. Tasted May 2020

(58% cabernet sauvignon, 36% merlot and 6% cabernet franc) Deep, bright ruby. Crushed cassis, minerals and licorice on the nose, with a suggestion of menthol austerity that may simply be a function of the wine's sheer concentration. Dense, sweet and pure, with very intense, sharply delineated flavors of dark berries, menthol and minerals. This really spreads out impressively on the back end, finishing with big but silky tannins and great strength and purity. Having once tasted the 1928, 1945 and 1961 Haut-Bailly blind and thinking they were of first-growth category, I am confident in predicting that the young 2005 has the sheer structure to live for a long time. A superb sample.

Dark, youthful red; fresh, crisply sweet, subtly gravelly early bouquet; a still firmly tannic, fresh, medium full wine; freshly ripe in flavour, delicate and fine, but without weakness, typical Haut Bailly finesse and aromatic complexity within the firm, fine frame; delicate, sweet, long and fragrant in aftertaste. A touch of textural austerity still. 2020 – 30+

58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc. Full, deep colour with a touch of brick at the rim. Intense and profound on the nose with dark fruit, spice and l iquorice notes. Plenty of substance on the palate, the fruit full, ripe and expressive. Cassis notes again. Big tannic frame but tannins rounded. Firm, dry finish. Exudes balance and harmony and still has a way to go. (JL)

Sweet-ink nose. Solid Graves with some freshness but perhaps no ingredient X. A very dry end. Quite long though. (JR)
