The 1998 Palmer is a blend of 52% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. It is a wine that I have tasted three or four time though not since 2011. Thomas Duroux did not make this wine since he debuted in 2004, although he mentioned that it is one of his favourite vintages of this decade. I would agree. It has developed a very charming bouquet that is equidistant between primary and secondary aromas: blackberry, raspberry, cedar, crushed violet, leather and clove all beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine line of acidity and satisfying red fruit laced with black tea, clove, white pepper and just a hint of hung game. There is more freshness here than many of its peers and it just articulates Palmer with more clarity than other vintages during this era. At 20 years this Palmer has really blossomed. A classic Margaux, the 1998 Palmer has put on weight and fleshed out during its elevage in barrel. It displays a dense purple color as well as a sumptuous bouquet of black fruits, licorice, melted asphalt, pain grille, and a touch of acacia flowers. Full-bodied, with brilliant definition, this blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a dollop of Petit Verdot, will age well for 20-30 years. It is one of the Medoc's, as well as the Margaux appellation's finest wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2028.

Deep ruby-red. Dark berries, roasted nuts, mocha, espresso and bitter chocolate on the nose. Very concentrated and bright, with the flavors framed by firm tannic spine. Showing a bit more grip today than the '99, but the '99 may have more sweetness and density and possesses the stuffing to benefit from the elevage.

Mushroom, spice, earth and berry character on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied, with soft tannins and meaty, berry and cèpe flavors. Tannins are still a little angular. Give it a little time.--'88/'98 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2008). James Suckling

Dark crimson. Polished. Animal scent with lovely round richness. Dry finish but super energetic. Lovely balance but you need background knowledge to appreciate it at this price! Clean but it finishes a little suddenly. (JR)
