Petit-Figeac, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2015
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Figeac is a truly extraordinary Bordeaux property for so many reasons. Located to the west of St Emilion - it is actually closer to Libourne than to the hilltop town which gives the appellation its name - it is one of the few large-scale, high quality properties in the area which remains in family ownership. Figeac is also planted unlike any other estate in the area with its (loose) proportions of a third each of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. These latter vines are perfectly suited to the patches of gravel soils which are spread across the property and since the estate moved to micro-vinification, allowing true plot-by-plot picking and production, the complexity of the terroir has been exhibited more clearly than ever before. The de Manoncourts have invested heavily and General Manager Frederic Faye continues to impress us with his skill, good humour and above all, his capacity to get the very best out of this unique piece of St Emilion terroir.

Tasting Notes and Scores

92-93 BI

The second wine of St. Emilion Château Figeac. Dark, rich, blackcurrant fruit with savoury spice and a sense of freshness. Lovely sweet, ripe fruit, supple texture, firm but sweet tannins. Extremely high quality of fruit and finish. What a second wine! (48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc.) – (April 2016)

This is very perfumed and beautiful with sandalwood, dark berries and light nutmeg aromas. Full-bodied, yet refined and very balanced with berry and hazelnut undertones. Focused and bright. Drink in 2020.

Composed of 32% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Petit Figeac reveals notes of warm cherries, red currant jelly, aniseed and forest floor with touches of wild blueberries and blackberries. Medium-bodied, very finely crafted, elegant and refreshing, it fills the mouth with open-knit red and black fruits, finishing with a velvety texture paving the way. LPB

The 2015 Petit Figeac is a blend of 32% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, representing around one-third of the production. It has a perfumed blackberry, raspberry coulis and boysenberry-scented bouquet - fruit forward and very pure. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, fresh in the mouth, dark berry fruit and a slight gravelly, almost Graves-Like note thanks to that Cabernet. Often overlooked, this is well worth seeking out. – eRobertParker.com, April 2016

The 2015 Petit-Figeac has come together nicely since I last tasted it. Fruity, forward and supple, it is tasty second wine meant to be enjoyed in its youth. The slightly roasted character I saw en primeur is less evident today.

35% of the crop; they have to make a second wine because they have quite a lot of young vines. 32% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon. Yield 41 hl/ha. Picked 21 September - 15 October (for very late Cabernet Franc)! 30% new oak and shorter élevage.
Good drive and raciness on the nose. Real sinew and savour. Polished tannins but good Figeac character. A success! Superior ink. GV? 14%
