Tasting Notes and Scores

92 DR

Rich black cherry fruits, with bitter cherry pits on the finish. There is both density and power in this wine, creamy in the mid palate, with brightness and lift. The acidity is higher than in recent years from a leading Pomerol on the appellation's prime plateau, but that is the vintage character, and they have done a great job in ensuring a clarity to the expression, and a juicy finish with saffron-edged baked apple, earthy rosebud and liqourice. 50% new oak, including 500l casks, and a small amount in amphora. Needs time to open because there are layers here, 3.6ph. This was the first full vintage since AXA Millesimes sold to the Moulin family of Chateau Beauregard (and Galeries Lafayette) in March 2020. Same footprint of vines since the 16th century, with the oldest vines dating back to the 1940s, used for massal selection. Harvest September 29 to October .

The 2021 Petit-Village was picked in several tries through the parcels, this vintage the first using a density sorter and made 100% by gravity. Harvested between September 29 and October 5 and matured in 50% new oak, it has a very pure bouquet of black cherries and blueberry fruit, crushed violet coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, the Cabernet component imparting almost Left Bank traits of pencil lead and cedar. Displaying good depth, and more cohesive than vintages that I was tasting five to six years ago, this Petit-Village demonstrates fine focus. Though it needs a little more fruit on the finish, it should age well in bottle. (13.5% alcohol)

Aromas of dark berries, cherries, sweet spices and raw cocoa introduce the 2021 Petit Village, a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, ambitious wine that's layered and velvety, with lively acids and ripe but rather chewy tannins. The fruit of a rigorous selection, I appreciate all the hard work that's going here, but I wonder if a gentler touch with extraction might have delivered something more sensual. It's a blend of 65% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, and it was picked late but very quickly, benefiting from the Moulin family's large picking team.

The 2021 Petit-Village is a pretty supple wine, with lovely fruit purity and terrific balance. There is good energy and depth throughout. The 2021 was made only from the old vines here. It will be interesting to see what the new ownership team brings, as Petit-Village sits on what most observers consider pretty hallowed ground. Antonio Galloni, Vinous, May 2022

75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Very dark. Bright aroma of cassis fruit. Lovely open aroma. Savoury, dark and dry on the palate, the tannins fine-boned and shaping the wine around the fruit core. Elegant but not seductive. Dry, fresh finish. (JH)

15.5 JR

Tasted blind. Shaded crimson. Quite sturdy and savage in its impact on the palate. Not much fun. Where’s the sweetness of the appellation? Sour, drying finish. Yeast-extract notes. Long-term wine. (JR)
