Tasting Notes and Scores

Dark ruby garnet. Intense tobacco, cedar, berry and blackberry. Full-bodied, silky, firm and fresh. Long. A beauty. One of the best bottles I have ever had.--Bordeaux retrospective. Drink now.

This is more translucent than Lafleur and a glowingbrick-red in hue. There’s plenty ofhead-turning exoticism on the nose: spice, truffle, the coffee-roaster’syard. On the palate, the wine shows itsage without being tired; the acid levels seemed among the lowest of the group, and once again there was no sense of bony senescence. The flavours were unapologetically mature:wild mushroom, beef stock, fine tobacco. Rewarding and delicious – just not quite the blockbuster one hopes for on sight of this label.

Fully mature, the wine is filled with all the chocolate-covered, black cherries, black raspberries, plums, mocha, and truffle you could ask for. The round, slightly dusty, plummy finish is pure Pomerol. I just wish there was a bit more of it. Tasted Sept 2022

The 1982 Petrus is consistent with my previous notes. This has a lovely bouquet, perhaps a little purer than the bottle from February 2018 with just joyful black cherries, black truffle and cedar aromas, more red fruit developing with aeration. I appreciate the brightness. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, moderate in terms of complexity, more secondary notes towards the second half with sage, undergrowth and touches of leather. Whilst it does not exude the precision of the magnum encountered three or four years back (still the finest example of the 1982 Petrus that I have tasted) it is a wonderful Pomerol, if nowhere near the notion of perfection. Tasted at the Petrus dinner at Hide restaurant in London and then at Epure restaurant in Hong Kong.

Given what I thought this wine would achieve, the 1982 Petrus has not turned out to be nearly as profound as expected. It reveals a certain herbaceousness, and there is significantly less concentration than I initially believed (too much filtration?) along with a cedary spiciness. Tasters who have had no previous experience with this wine will find it to be an outstanding effort that has reached full maturity much faster than some of its peers. It is capable of lasting a long time, but there is an underlying vegetal character, and the 1982 is far less concentrated than the vintages of Petrus that have been produced since 1989. I believe this wine is fully mature, and is capable of lasting another 10-15 years, but it is unlikely to improve.

From barrel, this remains one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted. Whether fining and filtration pulled more out of it than was intended, only the proprietor knows. However, the 1982 Petrus turned in a strong performance in Philadelphia in contrast to other tastings when it has been less than spectacular. The color reveals some amber at the edge. A sweet nose of caramel, roasted herbs, cherry jam, cedar, and smoke is followed by a thick, full-bodied, unctuously-textured, low acid Petrus that is approaching full maturity. This was a dazzling showing for this 1982, which has performed irregularly since birth. Although abundant tannin remains, the wine is sweet, smoky, and ideal for drinking now and over the next 20-25 years. A bottle drunk in France in March, 2000, was equally sublime. (98)

A bottle bought from Edmund Penning-Rowsell's cellar. Lovely and sweet – very fleshy. Much more structured than the 1990s (Latour and Cheval) just served, also blind. Denser than the Mouton 1982. Very, very easy to like.
