Chateau Pichon Baron 2eme Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2009
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac

Pichon Baron is the most photographed Chateau in Bordeaux and produced good, occasionally brilliant, wines from the 60s to 80s. Since the purchase of Pichon Baron in 1988 by AXA Millesimes, the property has gone from strength to strength to become one of the most consistent in quality and fair in value. The quality achieved from this grand terrior is constantly biting at the heels of next door neighbour Latour. Under the stewardship of Christian Seely this estate has shown itself to be one of the most consistently high-performing Chateaux in Pauillac, if not the whole of the Medoc. The improvements began under the auspices of Jean-Michel Cazes (of Lynch Bages fame) culminating in the sensational 1989/90 combination; they continued and indeed arguably picked up further pace in 2000 when the charming, bow-tie-sporting Christian Seely took over. Since then the estate has moved to a new level, with the most significant change being the accurate identification of the most appropriate plots across the estate for each of their wines. Whilst this has inevitably reduced the potential volume, the quality of fruit which now goes into the Grand Vin is so exceptional that Pichon Baron can be considered a true paragon of Pauillac. As Neal Martin states “the wines of Pichon-Baron certainly rank with some of the best in Pauillac... This is undoubtedly a château that has really found its own identity since the late-80's and under the aegis of Christian Seely, is asserting itself as a Pauillac wine to be reckoned with.”

Tasting Notes and Scores

98 RP

98pts - Revealing incredible quality and performing better than it did from barrel, the 2009 appears to be the greatest Pichon Longueville Baron since the 1990 and 1989. An amazing opaque blue/purple color is followed by scents of spring flowers, graphite, smoky charcoal, incense, blackberries, blueberries and hints of coffee and chocolate. Incredibly intense, pure and flawlessly constructed with extravagant layers of fruit and richness, this offering has developed beautifully under the management of Christian Seeley. It is a voluptuous, opulent Pichon Longueville Baron that may eclipse anything they have made in the past. This brilliant wine should be at its peak between 2018 and 2045.

Robert Parker (Wine Advocate #199, Feb 2012)

96pts - The 2009 Pichon-Longueville Baron has a medium to deep garnet color and a very meaty/savory nose over a core of sweaty leather, baked blackberries and plums with notions of crème de cassis, sautéed herbs and black olives coming through with coaxing. Full, rich, concentrated and decadently fruited in the mouth, the palate has beautifully plush tannins and an herbal lift on the long finish.Lisa Perrotti-Brown, March 2019

Straight away the deep, rich colour tells you that this is a sexy, powerful wine, barely hitting the next stage of evolution at seven years old. The nose is rich and spicy, and carries through perfectly onto the palate of exotic, spiced plum flavours with a tarry, liquorice edge. Great confidence on display. 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot. Drinking Window 2017 - 2045

The 2009 Pichon-Baron replicates its epic performance at the vertical tasted last year. It has one of the finest bouquets among the group of Pauillac with copious blackberry, mint, melted tar and graphite notes, fresh and supremely well focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very well judged acidity. Harmonious with plenty of tobacco and pencil lead infused black fruit towards the persistent finish. Awesome. - vinous.com, March 2019

Bold, smoky and chocolatey, this is a concentrated and massive wine for the Medoc, the alcohol showing slightly at the bold warm finish. Where is that T-bone steak? Drink or hold. (Horizontal Tasting, London, 2019) - Stuart Pigott, jamessuckling.com, March 2019

[66CS/33M] Dense ripe blackberry / blackcurrant and subtle mineral nose; promises a wonderful cassis bouquet! Great scope and range just to smell. Beautifully balanced, supple yet fresh, rich and finely tannic wine, an effortless grand scale balance; sweetly ripe fruit, fresh definition, no hard edges; long, close wrought, gravelly, mouthcoating, gently spicy, resonantly aromatic. A very fine, aristocratic Baron with great fruit and mineral length. Probably its finest wine for a couple of generations. 2020-40+
