Chateau Pichon Baron 2eme Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2012
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac

Pichon Baron is the most photographed Chateau in Bordeaux and produced good, occasionally brilliant, wines from the 60s to 80s. Since the purchase of Pichon Baron in 1988 by AXA Millesimes, the property has gone from strength to strength to become one of the most consistent in quality and fair in value. The quality achieved from this grand terrior is constantly biting at the heels of next door neighbour Latour. Under the stewardship of Christian Seely this estate has shown itself to be one of the most consistently high-performing Chateaux in Pauillac, if not the whole of the Medoc. The improvements began under the auspices of Jean-Michel Cazes (of Lynch Bages fame) culminating in the sensational 1989/90 combination; they continued and indeed arguably picked up further pace in 2000 when the charming, bow-tie-sporting Christian Seely took over. Since then the estate has moved to a new level, with the most significant change being the accurate identification of the most appropriate plots across the estate for each of their wines. Whilst this has inevitably reduced the potential volume, the quality of fruit which now goes into the Grand Vin is so exceptional that Pichon Baron can be considered a true paragon of Pauillac. As Neal Martin states “the wines of Pichon-Baron certainly rank with some of the best in Pauillac... This is undoubtedly a château that has really found its own identity since the late-80's and under the aegis of Christian Seely, is asserting itself as a Pauillac wine to be reckoned with.”

Tasting Notes and Scores

94 NM

The 2012 Pichon Baron is a magnificent wine that exudes freshness on the nose, with razor-sharp graphite notes suffusing the black fruit. The structured, linear palate just “sings” Pauillac; it is not as bold or as ambitious as the 2009 or 2015, yet there is perfect dryness toward the finish that urges you to take another sip. Granted, it is far too soon to broach this wine – I just couldn’t help myself.

A pretty core of ripe-berry, currant and mineral character to this red with a full body, silky tannins and a fresh finish to add. Creamy texture. Better in 2017. – jamessuckling.com, Feb 2015

The 2012 Pichon-Longueville Baron is wonderfully aromatic and textured in the glass. Scents of smoke, pipe tobacco and cedar meld into a core of intense dark fruit. Pliant and supple, but with considerable underlying structure, the 2012 is likely to drink well for the next two to three decades, perhaps longer, but it is also going to need at least a few years in bottle for the tannins to soften.

A silky, pure, even sexy, Pauillac that excels in the vintage, the 2012 from Pichon Longueville Baron sports a deep ruby/purple color to go with surprisingly ripe notes of black currants, toasted bread, saddle leather and sweet oak. Full-bodied, ripe, plush and supple, with low acidity and ripe, yet present tannin, it needs 4-5 years of cellaring and will drink beautifully over the following 15-20 years.

As for the big sibling, the 2012 Pichon Baron (80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot) probably has the most saturated purple color of the Pauillacs. Its structure is apparent, and the wine offers a wealth of blackcurrant fruit interwoven with licorice, graphite, and background toasty oak. Full-bodied, opulent and moderately tannic, this wine is approachable now because of its low acidity, but promises to age beautifully for 20+ years. This is another great classic from Pichon Baron. 93 points – Robert Parker (Wine Advocate #218, April 2015)

[80CS/20M] Inky; dense to smell, dense to taste; rich, elegant, concentrated and tannic, lively in acidity and with plenty of matter at its heart; deep, complex, close grained wine, ample but contained and with excellent aromatic length alongside a lovely sweet fruit persistence. A grand presence, a fine, complete, aristocratic Pauillac. 2022-32+ [M.Schuster, Bordeaux Mar/Apr 2013]

(80% Cabernet Sauvignon/20% Merlot)
Lovely, enticing nose. Sweet, ripe blackcurrant fruit, real purity and juicy characters. Strawberry, redcurrant and damson. Vibrant and engaging. Lovely.

This has a lively spine of briar that pumps through the core of cassis and plum fruit, while anise and sweet tobacco notes fill in on the finish. Shows a twinge of plum skin at the end, but delivers more than enough flesh and drive overall. A solid effort. Best from 2017 through 2027. 14,165 cases made. – James Molesworth (WineSpectator.com, March 2015)

Tasted blind. Meaty nose suggests some Merlot. Round and supple until quite a weight of tannins on the end. Quite appetising. Some attempt at opulence. Drink: 2022-2030 – jancisrobinson.com, Jan 2016
