Tasting Notes and Scores
The 1945 La Tâche was served blind at an innocuous dinner in a London hotel, with just three people attending. Strangely, despite its age, the first wine that comes into my head is La Tâche, though I suggested that it was from the Eighties instead of the Forties! Showing some bricking on the rim, the bouquet is intoxicating: vestiges of red fruit, sous-bois, bay leaf and black tea, all delivered with exquisite delineation. The palate is equally complex with filigree tannins and a core of what once must have been concentrated red fruit. Harmonious and poised, there are subtle notes of cedar, dark chocolate and tea leaves towards the extraordinarily long finish. Utterly divine. I was astonished when the bottle itself was revealed.
