Tasting Notes and Scores

The 2015 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, which includes 40% stems, has a gorgeous, engaging bouquet with a conspicuous oyster shell/marine influence running through the crystalline red berry fruit. There is outstanding aromatics, tension and energy here. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, harmonious and candied with finer tannin than the Mazoyères-Chambertin that one used to find with Bertrand Maume's wines, blessed with superb salinity and precision on the finish. This is a brilliant wine from Domaine Tawse, probably the best that has been made under the new ownership.

(picked on September 12; vinified with 50% whole clusters): Deep red-ruby. Liqueur-like dark fruits and black olive on the nose. Very rich, pliant and concentrated in a rather wild, soil-driven way. Combines almost syrupy ripeness with a wonderfully tactile mouth feel and finishes very long, with dusty firming tannins. This reminded me of some top older vintages of this bottling, but this '15 is cleaner.

Cask sample. 40% stems. Much riper on the nose than the Champeaux. Sweet and spicy but with a dry, fine texture. Lithe and scented on the palate. Persistent too. Tightly woven. (JH)
