Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2015 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru has a very refined bouquet, offering more obvious red berry fruit than the 2014 if not quite the same degree of precision. The palate is medium-bodied, very pure and refined with a fine delineation, harmonious from start to finish with lightly spiced red fruit and that same disarming clarity that I discerned on the finish when I tasted this 2015 in barrel. Superb. Tasted at Flint Wines’ Taupenot-Merme retrospective.

(these vines are now 60 years of age): Bright medium red. Classic terroir -driven scents of musky plum, brown spices and mocha. Round and plush on the palate but juicy too; a step up in texture and depth from the village Morey, showing more mid-palate fleshiness than the Combe d'Orveau as well. Sweet flavors of red fruits, spices and saline minerality lead to a ripe, long, salty finish.

The 2015 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru La Riotte opens in the glass with a pretty nose of sweet cherry, warm spice and strawberry. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a chalky chassis of tannin, bright acids and a firm, grippy finish.

Recently blended and racked prior to tasting. Same geology as Mazoyères. One of Morey’s leading premier crus. Lots of clay which helps the vines survive drought. And most of the vines are very old (Olivier Jouan's vines planted 1925). Taupenot vines are about 55 years old. Suave and sweet and with a bit more freshness than the Cécile Tremblay wines. Fine but sculptured. (JR)
