Quite a contrast to the 1989 and 1990, this was a cooler, less ripe vintage. When the 1988s were first released they were dominated by a lively acidity, very austere and unapproachable. But it’s a vintage that has more recently provided some of the finest Champagnes I’ve ever tasted. Head winemaker Séverine Frerson describes it as 'a wine with exceptional ageing potential', and a more ‘classic’ expression of the Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque style. It still has that trademark freshness of the vintage but now epicurean aromas of notes of toast, spice and honey are emerging. 48% Chardonnay (Cramant, Avize, Chouilly, Le Mesnil sur-Oger, Oger, Vertus), 47% Pinot Noir (Ambonnay, Bouzy, Chigny Les Roses, Mailly, Verzenay, Verzy, Aÿ), 5% Pinot Meunier (Dizy, Venteuil).
