Tasting Notes and Scores

95 RP

Selosse’s NV Extra-Brut La Cote Faron is the wine that replaces Contraste in the lineup. The current release is based on the 2005 vintage, with wines back to 1994. Sweet, perfumed and intensely layered, the Cote Faron is remarkably elegant and polished for a wine of this size. Sweet herbal and floral notes are layered into the perfumed, totally sensual finish.

Disgorgement date: April 20, 2012. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.

Despite all of the acclaim and recognition Anselme Selosse has received over the years, he continues to push the envelope of what Champagne is and can be. The new lieu-dit Champagnes, which now encompass six different bottlings – all of them multi-vintage blends – are off the charts, but frankly, so are the rest of the wines. Readers who want to learn more about Selosse might want to take a look at my recent videos on our site. Selosse fans might also want to consider a stay at Les Avizes, the hotel Anselme Selosse and his wife Corinne recently opened in Avize, which is probably the best way to visit this iconic producer.

The NV Extra-Brut Grand Cru La Cote Faron is ridiculously great. Layers of fruit emerge effortlessly from this large-scaled, dramatic Champagne. The wine needs quite of time to open up, but when it does it is a stunner. This is pure Ay in its rich, voluptuous personality and creamy texture. Red berries, dried flowers, licorice, mint and licorice are layered into the rich, seductive finish. Readers who prefer a more mineral-driven style of Blanc de Noirs will prefer the Le Bout de Clos, Selosse’s wine from Ambonnay, while those who prefer a more overt expression of fruit will flip out over the Cote Faron. Either way, it’s hard to lose. They are both magnificent. Disgorged February 21st, 2011. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015.

The NV Extra-Brut Grand Cru La Cote Faron is 100% Pinot Noir from Ay and replaces the wine previously known as Contraste. A rich, burnished wine, the Cote Faron emerges from the glass with deep, baritone fruit layered into dried flowers, sweet baking spices and chalk. The signature Selosse textural elegance is in full force, even if the finish is not quite as long as it could be. Disgorged January 27, 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2015.

Anselme Selosse is one of Champagne’s most iconic figures. This year Selosse has two new wines that are the first in what will be a selection of six lieu-dit Champagnes, all made with the solera process. For now, these remain works in progress. It will be interesting to see the direction the wines take from here.
