Tasting Notes and Scores
A performance of sensational concentration and class commences with heady, high-toned scents of ripe peach, rowan, heliotrope and almond extract. Tang and piquancy of peach near the core lend counterpoint and invigoration to an otherwise envelopingly rich and creamy palate performance whose liquid floral dimension is improbably vivid, not to mention seductive. The sense of lift here approaches sheer weightlessness, rendering the intensity of flavor almost magical. Nutty notes lend further contrast to the wine’s intense fruit and perfume, while shrimp-shell reduction introduces a mouthwateringly saline, mineral-laden dimension only approached by one other overtly sweet Auslese of this collection. The finish at once soothes and stimulates, daring you to pull a stopwatch on it. To say that botrytis has done its work well here without leaving any obvious let alone coarse signs of breaking and entering would be a ridiculous understatement. This is in a class by itself among 2015 vintage Mosel Auslesen. My projection of longevity may well be too conservative, but Molitor wines of this quality are a phenomenon of at most the last quarter-century, and my opportunities to taste any with more than 15 years’ bottle age have been quite limited. (Unsurprisingly given its performance, Molitor chose to present this wine after his riper “three-star” Auslese from the Klosterberg.)
