Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2016 Giorgio Primo is flat out stunning. It is also a rare Giorgio Primo in which Merlot takes the leading role, the last being 2007. A rush of blackberry jam, graphite, lavender, spice and menthol build as the 2016 shows off its potent, beautifully layered personality. Even with all of its fruit intensity, the 2016 retains terrific energy, tension and drive. All of the elements come together in a statuesque, arrestingly beautiful Giorgio Primo. The 2016 spent 16 months in French oak, 50% new. It is an absolutely unforgettable wine from La Massa and proprietor Giampaolo Motta and his team.
Antonio Galloni
A dense and rich red with blackcurrants, berries and chocolate, as well as undertones of fresh porcini mushrooms and wet earth, on both the nose and the palate. Full and flavorful. Chewy tannins.
James Suckling
The consistency and depth of this wine is just incredible. Like the Carla 6, the 2016 Giorgio Primo shows an inky dark color, almost totally black, with penetrating fruit and long waves of rich fruit flavor throughout. George the First casts mesmerizing spells of spice, tar and smoke. This is a blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. This is another outstanding effort from Fattoria La Massa and its eccentric but visionary founder, Giampaolo Motta. Some 16,000 bottles, magnums, double magnums and other large formats were created.
