La Rioja Alta, Vina Ardanza Reserva, Rioja

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2009
Region: Rioja

Alongside neighbouring producers Muga, CVNE, and Lopez de Heredia, La Rioja Alta sit at the top table of Rioja producers, crafting exceptionally complex and delicious wines at an accessible price point. Nothing is rushed here with extended barrel and bottle ageing for their top wines. Whilst they are released to market when ready to drink they still have years – decades in a top year – ahead of them, with further complexity and haunting aromatics to be discovered. Their key wines are Vina Ardanza, and the Riojas 904 and 890. Vina Ardanza is the bodega’s ‘Burgundy’ styled wine, hence the Burgundy bottle shape, and was created in 1942; however it changed fundamentally in 1999 when a newly purchased vineyard at higher altitude became its source of fruit. La Rioja Alta’s Gran Reserva 904 was named to celebrate the merger of La Rioja Alta and the Ardanza winery in 1904 – hence the numerical moniker. The 904 Gran Reserva brings the ideal combination of rich fruit and oak influence that so characterises the classic wines of this region. Made on average just 4-5 times a decade, it is certainly one of the leading lights of Rioja. 890 is the flagship Gran Reserva, being almost entirely produced from Tempranillo (904 is up to 10% Graciano) and 6 or more years’ ageing in oak versus 4 years for the 904.

Tasting Notes and Scores

95 BI

Ardanza is a classic, pan-regional Rioja, blending Tempranillo from the Rioja Alta with 20% Garnacha from Tudelilla in the Rioja Oriental. It’s a richer, plusher wine than the 2008, reflecting the warmer vintage, but it’s not remotely ponderous. Floral, fine and very complete with fennel and sweet Asian spices, tangy acidity and deftly handled American oak. 2018-26. - Tim Atkin

The current vintage of one of the flagship wines from La Rioja Alta is the 2009 Viña Ardanza Reserva, the second year it has contained 20% Garnacha grapes from their estate vineyards in La Pedriza in the village of Tudelilla in Rioja Baja. The Tempranillo comes from vineyards averaging 30 years of age in Fuenmayor and Cenicero. The hand-harvested bunches were sorted and put in boxes, transferred to the winery at 14 degrees Celsius to be destemmed and crushed, then the grapes fermented in stainless steel, including malolactic. The two varieties were aged separately, 36 months in used American oak barrels for Tempranillo and 30 months for Garnacha, and racked every six months. It was initially closed, shy and serious, riper and a little darker than the 2008 but still very balanced, serious and harmonious. The palate combines power with elegance, with some tannins, focused flavors, some chalky texture and a rustic touch that gives it character. - The Wine Advocate #235, Luis Gutierrez, February 2018

A plush texture carries cherry, strawberry, vanilla, tea and spice flavors in this traditional red. Light tannins and orange peel acidity keep this lively and focused. Spicy and floral notes linger on the finish. Drink now through 2018. 50,000 cases made. - winespectator.com, October 2018
