Tasting Notes and Scores

97 NM

The 2016 Hosanna has a classy bouquet of delineated black fruit laced with cedar, tobacco and ferrous notes. The medium-bodied palate features supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and lovely spiciness toward the finish. There is impressive cohesion here and wonderful length, completing a seriously impressive Hosanna that appears to be improving in bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Such a polished wine from the outset. This has a very deep thread of dark plums, black stones and dark cocoa powder, running from nose to palate. The finish is swathed in rich and plush tannins and delivers profound depth with unblemished fruit purity. Stunning Pomerol. Try from 2023.

From a tiny 11-acre parcel of clay soils and a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Château Hosanna is a rocking success in the vintage. Boasting a deep ruby/purple color, notes of blackcurrants, iron, smoked earth, chocolate and subtle floral notes, a layered, full-bodied mouthfeel, and sweet, building tannins, it's a seamless, elegant, yet still powerful Hosanna that needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will cruise for two decades.

Powerful, intense, rich, opulent and still a baby, this hedonistic beauty is packed with silky-textured, black plums, espresso, dark cocoa, black cherry liqueur and wet earth. Perfectly balanced on both sides with its density of fruit, and velvet-textured, fresh, chocolate-covered berries, this could take until 2028-2030 before it begins to enter its secondary stage.

The 2016 Hosanna is composed of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Medium garnet-purple colored, it comes spilling out of the glass with the most beautiful floral perfume of lilacs and lavender over a core of black and red cherries, black raspberries and cedar chest plus hints of tobacco and chocolate mint. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is elegantly styled with beautiful floral and cherry layers framed by velvety tannins, finishing long and fragrant. LPB

The 2016 Hosanna is a big, powerful wine. Far more introverted and brooding than it was en primeur, Hosanna gives the impression of a wine that is going to need quite a bit of time to fully recover from bottling. Today, the fruit is a bit muted, although the wine's power, depth and overall structure are very much present. Mocha, espresso, grilled herbs and leather build into the dark, somber finish.

Antonio Galloni

2016 is clearly not the most exuberant Pomerol vintage ever, and yet here it offers a tantalising glimpse of a wine that will last a good few decades. It's another deft display of precision winemaking, playing with the idea of concentration by offering dense damson and cassis puree layered with rosemary and black olive, uplifted by menthol on the finish. Touches of violet lighten the overall impression. This has improved since I last tasted it. - decanter.com, Jane Anson, October 2018

Tiny Mouiex-owned Pomerol estate which produces famously smoky, supple and attractive wines. Sultry, smoky perfume, enticing and ripe with a floral, musky edge. Silky, fine tannins, lovely mouthfeel, great juicuy mid palate and density of fruit. Spice and exotic fruits come through the mid palate and into the long finish. - April 2017

Nicely rendered, with flashes of cocoa and juniper leading the way, followed by a dense core of black current, fig and blackberry preserve flavors. Dense finish, but delivers lovely polish and finesse at the same time. Best from 2022 through 2036. 850 cases made. JM

Very deep crimson. Heady and seductive nose. Both rich and lifted. Real substance and richness. Polish and depth. Massive dimension. Panoply of spice and fruit. Very exciting. Drink 2025-2045. - jancisrobinson.com, April 2017
