The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Champans reveals aromas of cherries, sweet berries, dark chocolate, rich spices and loamy soil, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated palate framed by powdery tannins and lively acids, concluding with a sapid finish. As with the Clos des Chênes, this represents a particular success in 2020.

The 2020 Volnay Champans 1er Cru comes across as a little jammy on the nose with hints of cassis and black cherries, clarifying with aeration in the glass but still missing some complexity. The 2020 is ripe and opulent. A sweet core of cassis fruit mixes with marmalade and fig. Clean on the honeyed-textured finish, enjoyable, but again, the warmth of that summer denudes this of Burgundy DNA. It's a little monolithic and certainly well below its showing from barrel.
