Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2010 Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli represents a major departure for this historic estate. The Cabernet Sauvignon is gone, replaced by 8% Malvasia Nera and Colorino. Dark, rich and beautifully layered, but at the same time weightless, the 2010 impresses for its textural beauty and finesse. The flavors are naturally quite undeveloped at this stage, but the wine's balance is beyond reproach. My guess is that the 2010 will win Fonterutoli many new fans. It is one of the finest wines I have ever tasted here.
Antonio Galloni
A wine with very fine tannins and an attractive, tangy acidity that turns to sliced citrus fruit. Medium to full body. Clean finish. Drink now.
James Suckling
Representing the newest level added to the Chianti Classico quality- pyramid, the 2010 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli shows a deep dark color and elaborate aromas of ripe fruit, spice, mocha and tobacco. It’s a shapely, sophisticated Tuscan red with sweet baking spice on the close. The tannins are smooth, velvety and framed by an elegant mineral sensation. Congratulations to Francesco and Filippo Mazzei Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025. (Monica Larner)
